Excelente saga familiar que cuenta la historia de varias familias de Europa y EEUU.Este tomo es tan interesante como los dos anteriores. La pluma de Follet deja al lector satisfecho y enriquecido. Esta magnifica obra maestra es la culminación de la triología The Century. Cuando comence a leer La caida de los gigantes me parecia que iba a ser un buen libro pero que no llegaria a la altura de Los pilares de la Tierra, pero me equivoqué. Ken Follet ha demostrado ser un gran investigador y un maestro en la creación de los personajes de ficción para unirlos con los personajes que de alguna forma han marcado un hito en la historia humana. El segundo de la triologia "El invierno del mundo" podría decir que casi supera al primero y llegué a pensar que sería imposible que éste último me pudiese impresionar, pero nuevamente me equivoqué. Es una historia compleja, muy bien desarrollada y concatenada que narra hechos trascendentales como la crisis de los misiles, la lucha por los derechos civiles en Estados Unidos, la construccion del muro de Berlín, etc. Un libro extenso como todo el período histórico en que se desarrolla la trama pero al cual ni le falta ni le sobra una palabra. Si tuviese que describirlo con una sola palabra ésta sería "genial". Es un verdadero 5 estrellas.

Aunque ha sido muy emocionante leer novelada una parte de la historia reciente de Europa, este tercer libro ha sido el que menos me ha gustado de los tres. Con demasiada frecuencia, las historias parecen inverosímiles, y las casualidades que llevan a cruzarse a descendientes de las familias protagonistas de la trilogía, por repetitivas, pecan de exageración. Los personajes carecen de suficiente elaboración. Es como si Follett se olvidara en algunos momentos de lo que sus personajes han dicho o hecho anteriormente y les haga decir o hacer cosas que no parecen coherentes. En fin, en cualquier caso, lo interesante del libro es conocer la historia del siglo XX mientras se lee una novela.

Es difícil reunir las palabras, aun conmovida con la novela. Para todos aquellos que nacimos a finales del siglo XX, esta obra nos permite contextualizar los eventos mas importantes que ocurrieron durante la guerra fría y de allí en adelante hasta nuestros días. Personalmente, pude aprender del contexto de la segregación racial en los Estados Unidos, quién fue JFK (lo bueno y lo malo), Nixon y Watergate, Martin Luther King. Luego, reunir mis memorias acerca de la URSS y entender mejor porqué se separaron, el papel de Gorbachov y Lech Walesa. La parte de la caída del muro de Berlin me hizo llorar. Creo firmemente que esta trilogía debería ser parte del curriculum de historia contemporánea en todos los países, puesto que no solo está muy bien escrita sino que no está (en mi humilde opinión) sesgada o inclinada hacia un interés político o ideológico sino que cuenta lo que realmente ocurrió.

Este es el tercer libro de la trilogía The Century. La colección es muy interesante, desde la primera hoja del primer libro hasta el final del tercer libro. Ken Follett se apoya con múltiples historiadores para poner datos reales dentro de la novela.Los personajes dentro de la trilogía están relacionados como familias en diferentes países donde los personajes van incrementándose al tener hijos y nuevos individuos.El texto es muy amplio y toca temas históricos relevantes desde el principio al final.Varias generaciones pasan y en cada una se describen las cosas que ocurren en su momento... desde la caida de los principales imperios del siglo XIX hasta la llegada del primer Presidente Americano Afroamericano.Hay mucho texto que ayuda a entender a los personajes y otros que son relacionados con la situación del momento.MUY RECOMENDABLE

Un libro maravilloso que refleja la increíble capacidad literaria e histórica de Follett. Al través de la trilogía no pierde el hilo de los personajes ni de la historia. Envuelve en una situación crítica vivida por muchos de los que ahora tenemos más de 60 años: la guerra fría, que desde mi país se veía tan lejano y sin embargo nos afectaba definitivamente. Revela situaciones gubernamentales que son muy interesantes; no todo es lo que se oye en la media. Además no es aburrido, no es una serie de datos, sino que al través de sus personajes da la impresión de que lo estamos viviendo. Recomendadísimo

It is not often that you get to read a book that helps you to fully understand the pressure that those in public service have to endure. This was an excellent, well written autobiography that should strike a chord with those in demanding professions.

Der Autor ist ein herausragender Gerichtsmediziner Englands, der um die 30.000 Leichenöffnungen zur Feststellungen unklarer Todesursachen bzw. zur Klärung der genauen Todesursachen/Tötungsmechanismen und zugrunde liegenden Leiden ausgeführt hat. Er autopsierte Babys, Mord- und Unfall-, Terror- und Tsunami-Opfer. ERr war an Ground Zero und siebte menschliche Überreste aus dem Staub der Twin Towers. Und er kann exzellent schreiben, nach 30.000 akribisch verfassten, "gerichtsfesten" Autopsieberichten kein Wunder. Neben seinem Werdegang (er fing als Kind Feuer für die Gerichtsmedizin, als ein Klassenkamerad aus Papas Bücherregal den "Gruselband" Keith Simpsons reich bebildertes Standardwerk heimlich in die Schule brachte) kommt er ganz schnell zum Gefühl (Panikattacken beim Flug über einen Unglücksort), die Kindheit mit schwer herzkranker Mutter, deren Tod und der mit - häufig unterdrückten - Gefühlen kämpfenden Restfamilie), sowie seiner Technik, Gefühle bei der Arbeit - und dann leider auch in der ersten Ehe - zur Seite zu schieben. Er beschreibt in brillantem Stil, aber völlig ohne Selbstverherrlichung (dazu neigen einige der hartgesottenen Kollegen) Erlebnisse, die ihn geprägt haben. Schließlich gesteht er, dass er das Buch geschrieben hat im Zuge seiner langen und mühsamen Rekonvaleszenz nach einer posttraumatischen Belastungsstörung. Diese trat zu Tage, als er, der äußerst gewissenhafte und überaus gründliche "Leichenarzt", selbst angeklagt wurde wegen eines angeblich falschen Gutachtens zu einem toten Säugling. Dieser Stress, die Erschütterung seiner seelisch-moralischen Grundfesten, ließ ihn psychisch dekompensieren. Ergreifend, wie er seine Suizidgedanken beschreibt, Methoden der Selbsttötung mit sich selbst diskutiert und dabei noch Rücksicht auf seine Familie und andere Beteiligte nimmt. Das Buch ist ein Schatz. Shepherd gibt dem Leser eine Fülle an Medizin- und Gerichtsmedizin-Geschichte, und zeichnet parallel ein philanthropisches Menschenbild und portraitiert sich selbst - einen großen Mediziner, der durch seine jahrzehntelange, akribische und gleichzeitig faszinierende/fasziniert durchgeführte Arbeit dem Menschen dient und diente... und als Experte die 13.
